THE ROYAL PHOTOGRAPHIC SOCIETY INTERNATIONAL Print Competition

EXHIBIT YOUR WORK IN THE WORLD’S LONGEST RUNNING PRINT EXHIBITION

The Society invites professional, student and amateur photographers worldwide to submit their work. This year, for the first time in its history, we are inviting digital entries alongside print entries.  Both will be considered equally and the final exhibition will be displayed as prints, with online entries being printed professionally by Redcliffe Imaging Ltd.  All entrants will receive a copy of the exhibition catalogue.

Entry is open to everyone (RPS members and non-members) until 17 May 2013.  Entrants can submit up to 4 images online or as prints, into one of two groups;

Over 30’s
Under 30’s*

All styles of photography will be considered including documentary, fashion, fine art, photojournalism, travel, portraiture and nature. Each image submitted will be judged as a single, stand-alone image so you can enter a varied selection of work. 100 images will be selected for the printed touring exhibition, including the three award winners!

Non Member – £20 per person

* entrants will need to be under 30 on the closing date, 17 May 2013

The Exhibition showcases a wide range of genres and styles of photography, with cutting-edge prints being shown alongside traditional work – from the artistic to documentary, from portraiture to natural history.

Having a print selected for the touring exhibition offers great exposure for photographers just starting out in their careers as well as professionals and gives enthusiasts well deserved recognition. Previous selected International Print Exhibition photographers have included Simon Roberts FRPS, Laura Pannack and Julia Fullerton-Batten. The exhibition will tour for nearly a year from July 2013.

Originated as a response to the changing nature of the photography market, Magnum’s Professional Practice events deliver impartial guidance from a wide range of visual imaging industries. With access to key individuals working in editorial, commercial, cultural and publishing industries, Magnum is well placed to advise the next generation of photographers.

In a series of weekend lectures, leading figures of the photographic industry will deliver presentations and advice on the best means for engaging with and working in these sectors. Eight speakers from a variety of industries, including the advertising & corporate, editorial, gallery, NGO, museum, publishing and rights sectors will each give presentations on their subject of expertise, with plenty of time for questions and networking opportunities.

This event is aimed a wide range of photographers at different stages of their career: professional photographers working in a particular discourse but wanting to explore other avenues; emerging photographers who require practical, vocational training; or semi-professional photographers wishing to make the commitment to full-time practice. Each of Magnum’s Professional Practice lectures is tailored to deliver the best impartial advice and provide the opportunity to meet with key industry specialists. Places on Magnum’s Professional Practice course are limited and successful candidates will be chosen on the perceived benefit to the applicant’s career.

The next seminar will take place at the National Media Museum, Bradford, West Yorkshire, BD1 1NQ on 28-29 July.

Magnum’s Professional Practice events are produced in collaboration with their educational partners, IdeasTap. Through the generous support of IdeasTap, 10 photographers under the age of 25 are given the opportunity to participate in this event for the heavily subsidised rate of £50 plus VAT. Ways of Looking – Bradford Photography Festival

Ways of Looking is a new festival of photography in Bradford and runs throughout October 2011. Exploring the theme EVIDENCE, the festival presents new exhibitions and commissions, photography in public spaces, collaborations with Bradford residents, a specially published book, and an inspiring programme of events.

“With the National Media Museum and Impressions Gallery, Bradford is a hub for photography exhibitions and its capitalising on its position this October with the Ways of Looking festival. The festival, which is held across eight different venues, includes Daniel Meadows: Early Photographic Works and Donovan Wylie’s Outposts, both of which will be on show at the National Media Museum. Turner Prize winner Douglas Gordon will be exhibiting a specially-commissioned work, Self Portrait of You and Me (Blue Skies), at Impressions Gallery, while Jeremy Deller, who has also won a Turner Prize, will be showing Poking About, an exhibition created using Bradford Museums and Galleries’ photographic archives. The festival also includes shows by Red Saunders, Diane Bielik and Simon Ford and Colin Lloyd.

Ways of Looking opens on 30 September and will be staging special events throughout the weekend. Photography on Trial at the Victorian Courthouse, City Hall will see Stephen Bull and Nick McGowan-Lowe debate the pros and cons of copyrighting images at 2.30pm on Saturday 01 October, while Disco Politik will be playing at the Bradford Playhouse on Friday night.The festival is organised by Impressions Gallery, National Media Museum and The Culture Company, with Bradford Museums & Galleries, Bradford Grid, Fabric, Leeds Met Gallery & Studio Theatre and Gallery II, University of Bradford.” Author: Diane Smyth at the BJP
