The Denver Post Pictures of the Week puts together a collection of images, chosen from thousands, of the strongest photojournalism from around the world.

The 2012 Tour de France in pictures

This summer of sport has thrown up so many memorable moments and images, none greater than the 2012 Tour de France and the magnificent Bradley Wiggins. These pictures from The Atlantic are just a taste of the majesty of the toughest sporting competition on earth.

The 99th Tour de France cycling race began on July 1, as 22 teams of nine riders raced through Belgium, Switzerland and France. The entire tour covered a distance of 3,497 km (2,173 mi). Sky Procycling rider Bradley Wiggins of Great Britain became the first Briton ever to win the tour on Sunday, July 22. Gathered here are images from the second half of the 2012 Tour de France. Leonora Hamill, Eric Pillot win HSBC Photography Awards

Leonora Hamill and Eric Pillot were selected from a long-list of 500 entrants and a shortlist of 13 photographers chosen by art historian Rafael Doctor Roncero.

The winners will see their work published by Actes Sud later this year, and their images will go on show across France in four planned exhibitions. HSBC will also purchase at least six of the winning images for its private art collection, guaranteeing a €5000 cash prize to the laureates.

Hamill was chosen for her work Art in Progress, which is a “study of the human condition,” says Roncero. In recent years, Hamill has been cataloguing and photographing classrooms and places where people learn about art. “In her work, the collective aspect of artistic labour in its learning phase is predominant, which goes against the general preconception of an isolated and independent artist,” adds Roncero.

Pillot has received the HSBC Award (Photography has been a part of HSBC France’s cultural policy for many years now. Today, the Group’s patronage of the photographic arts is carried out by the Prix HSBC pour la Photographie, which was created in 1995 under the aegis of the Fondation de France.  The Prix HSBC pour la Photographie supports little-known professional artists by helping them to promote their work. Each year, the Prix HSBC sponsors two young contemporary photographers striving to capture the real world on film. There are no pre-requisites as to age or nationality....more.) For his work In Situ.”Pillot portrays the desolation of these animals that are so close to us. At the same time, he looks for their confrontational stares – stares that we can’t escape since there is no logical justification for the cruel spaces [we lock these animals in].”

Light Painting 3

As we continue to get response to our posts on Light Painting it seems worthwhile having a look at what else is out there to stimulate you. Maybe this interest is because it is so dark and dull all day here in the UK.

“Light painting, also known as light drawing or light graffiti is a photographic technique in which exposures are made usually at night or in a darkened room by moving a hand-held light source or by moving the camera. In many cases the light source itself does not have to appear in the image. The term light painting also encompasses images lit from outside the frame with hand-held light sources. The first known photographer to use this technique was Man Ray in his series “Space Writing” created in 1935. Photographer, Ellen Carey, discovered Man Ray’s signature signed by penlight nearly 74 years after the pictures had been taken.” here a a couple of Man Ray images from about 1935

Paris Photo 2010: The World’s Premier Fair for Photography

Annual photography fair Paris Photo brings together, from November 18th to the 21st, one hundred international galleries and publishers presenting a panorama of the finest examples of photographic expression from the 19th century to the present day.

Paris Photo turns the spotlight on the Central Europe scene, revealing new talents through awards and competitions and offers a rich program of events and encounters.

The 14th Paris Photo edition coincides with the biennial “Mois de la Photo”, a month-long photographic event, turning the city into the photography capital of the world in November.

With 78% of foreign participation, 25 represented countries, 31 new comers, this year’s edition marks the return of US galleries and a stronger showing of contemporary art galleries with Beaumontpublic (Luxemburg), Ernst Hilger (Vienne), I8 (Reykjavik), Anne de Villepoix (Paris), Hervé Loevenbruck (Paris) or Yossi Milo (New York).
